How to Prepare for 2019 - Bigger Goals, Fuller Life

23 December 2018

 Hi everyone!

I hope you're all excited for the upcoming year and enjoying the holiday season. I adore the festivities and the smiles on everyone's faces in December! I wanted to get back to the root of some of my old posts that created the foundation of this blog (which started in 2008, what!?)... and that was addressing topics about productivity and happiness. The feel good stuff and how to regularly attain it!

So I thought to myself, what better way to start off the year than by setting some goals early before the clock strikes midnight on December 31st? It will also get me back on track for sharing lifestyle tips and tricks. So grab a notebook, or pull up a cloud-stored file (so it's always on your phone for quick reference - hint hint), and let's get cracking.

1. Make a list of things that make you happy - start with at least 5 bullet points. Then schedule into a monthly calendar how you're going to achieve this multiple times per month. For example, I love learning and experiencing new things. I get a huge sense of fulfillment and I am proud of myself for doing a task that I was scared/not good at. So this year I scheduled in ONE NEW THING A MONTH. I did bouldering, roller skating, painting, sketching, BARRE class, candle-making, bread-making, amongst many other activities. I am so content with the outcome, because I discovered something new about myself each time (even if I sucked SUPER BAD - I'm looking at your rollerskating). It's such a confidence booster! So grab yourself a calendar and book those events in and give yourself NO EXCUSES for not completing them!

2. Following the same strain as above, put yourself in situations that make you uncomfortable so you can learn how to grow and adapt. Remember, our journey in life is lived through the path we travel to reach our goals, not the goal itself. What struggle do you want to go through this year? What skill set do you want to attain, and how are you going to get it? Give yourself an afternoon to think about some fears and weak spots you've got, and how you can tackle them. Social anxiety? Make yourself smile at one person a day, and go to one big social event a month where you HAVE to meet 5 people on your own aka you initiate conversation. Hermit Life got you down? Accept all the invitations that come your way for the first 5 months of the year. Public speaking give you hives? Enroll in public speaking classes, ask your boss to let you lead work presentations, etc. Put yourself out there and learn from your mistakes. This is the only way to improve!

3. Self Care - Make it a priority this year. We frequently follow rigid schedules to help us attain career-related goals, but what about helping your own body? We all know that exercising is important for our health, but few of us make it a priority. As is eating well and nourishing the brain. I'm making sure this year I have an accountability partner and set quarterly fitness goals so I can stay on track. I've discovered without a personal end-goal it's difficult to keep the motivation running. So 100 hrs of yoga by June 30, 2019 - I am looking at you! Tell me what your goals are, and if you're interested in an accountability buddy. Maybe we can start a little group and check in regularly.

It's going to be a fantastic year everybody, so make sure you plan it!

Cheers,
Chantelle

    1. Absolutely! And it will be really uncomfortable and awkward at first, but the more you do it the more finesse you have. I always remember how gangly and duckling like I was when I first started ballet, and then how smooth and elegant I became after years and years of training. Now even in Barre class I still keep all of my lines. Just like networking, once you learn it, you will have a skill for life!
