Winter Surprises

Sunday, December 27, 2015
Hi everyone!
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas (if you celebrate), and your holiday festivities are full of excitement, friends and family! It has been great being home and seeing all my loved ones. It's my last full winter break before residency starts, and by then I will only have a few days off to spread over the year. Hugging everyone extra tight this month!

Below are a couple shots of a Boohoo product I was sent to review (suede jacket) from their 70's collection. Winter has been pleasantly warm this year, and I was able to throw it over a cropped turtle neck and some high waisted jeans for brunch. The Boy and I discovered a new weekend brunch spot (Jasper's Cafe) in the suburbs, and I'm totally addicted to their breakfast skillets. I've gone back a few times already (jalapeno skillet + chorizo with poached eggs is my fave) and will probably be one of their new regulars!

I hope all of you have a Happy New Year, and see you on the other side! Now I'm off to binge of movies, paint my nails crazy colors (I've been so tame with interviews), and eat as much Portuguese food as possible!

My Hair Care Routine ft Diamond Flat Iron

Thursday, December 03, 2015

Hi everyone,
Great to be back on the blog! It has been a wild fourth year so far, and I've done tons of travelling for interviews. One of the constant companions I bring with me is a super lightweight hair straightener that was sent to me from Irresistible Me*. I use it the evening before the interview dinner, and then re-wash my hair and repeat in the morning for the real interview. The straightener heats to 460˚F in seconds, it's insane. The site claims it takes 15 seconds to reach maximum heat, and I can attest to that. I wouldn't be surprised if it's even faster. Since I have thin hair and very little of it, I can do my full head in 8-10 mins. I started avoiding my roots to help retain volume and make it look less flat (the downside of losing half your volume once starting medschool). My hair becomes wonderfully shiny after straightening, so I don't even use any gloss or pomades. I've yet to burn my fingers, or get tangled in the cord, so everything has be well designed. The straightener rarely leaves my carry-on luggage, which means I've used it a minimum of 15 times before writing this post. But as you all know, that's my motto with most products I get sent (put everything through extreme testing!). I really recommend this beauty, and it would be a great gift for a friend or yourself this Christmas. You can find more details on its features here, and also read about their tourmaline and diamond particle ceramic plates on the website. Yes, I said diamonds.

For all the products I use on a weekly basis please see the links below:
Nioxin for thinning hair - shampoo
Mon Platin black caviar - hair mask
Gold bobby pins
John Frieda creme (for days my hair is natural)
hair ties
Dauphines of New York - Barrette
(any shiny/bow hair accessories will do)
Clairol Shimmer Lights Purple - shampoo

What are all of your favorite hair care items?

A Fall Michigan Wedding

Tuesday, November 03, 2015

Hi everyone!
I thought I would share some of my DSLR and iPhone pictures from The Boy's sister's wedding. We had such a fun time falling into the beachy feel of this small town on Lake Michigan. The sky was gorgeous that day and made a beautiful backdrop for the ceremony. This was the first time I met most of The Boy's extended family, and I loved it! Enjoy and see you on the flipside!

Seafood pasta for the rehearsal dinner

The stunning Lake Michigan in early fall
Make-up prep done!
Quirky photobooth photos of The Boy and I - This was my favorite part of  the reception, after the dancefloor of course. >.<

What is your favorite part of weddings?! For Portuguese receptions, I love the midnight seafood and sweets buffet table. You have to roll everyone out of the hall at 3am from over eating!

Firmoo Review: Glasses for Small Faces

Thursday, October 29, 2015

6 hours into Step 2CK studying one evening last month. Glasses holding strong.

Hi everyone,

Today I'm reviewing a pair of prescription glasses I got sent from Firmoo a few weeks ago. I was in contact with them several times before I decided on a pair, because I ALWAYS have problems finding specs that fit my face. My head is small (like me) and glasses are typically too wide or big, hence making me look child-like or they fall off my face. Luckily, I took the team's advice and measured several of my old pairs before choosing from their suggested set of glasses for narrow faces. Mine have cute orange tips on the end, and the frames are half black half transparent. I've been wearing them weekly, and love them! The prescription is on point, I had to get my Illinois licence today and they helped me pass the vision test. Phew!
I can't find the exact pair anymore because they consistently update their stock. Here is a category with similar styles. Here is the daily new stock, and 15% off your first order!
Just an aside, look at this insane plant growing out the side of my coral cactus. Crazy!

What do you all think!?

Disclaimer: Opinions are all my own. I was not paid for this post, but I was offered the glasses. I worse them for almost a month, and have written my honest take on their fit and quality.

Pretty Cases for the iPhone 6S

Sunday, October 04, 2015
Hey everyone,

I thought I would make a collage of my fave cases for the newest iPhone. I picked one up unexpectedly after my iPhone 5 died on me a few hours before my flight to Denver (more on that city later). I picked up CaseMate's glitter case while at T-Mobile, and I am loving it. For more cute covers see below. Enjoy!

2015 Fall Fashion Under $100

Sunday, September 13, 2015
Hi everyone,

The weather has taken quite the turn here in the Midwest! In doing so, I'm reminded of the cozy knits and boots I reach for on a daily basis during the cooler parts of the year. Since I am preparing myself for another 6 months of chilly weather (sigh), I figured I should start stocking up on essentials early. So without further ado, here are my current picks for Fall 2015:

Tell me your favorite pieces are for fall, and what you can't live without. For me, it's a good thermos with hot hazelnut coffee every morning. Mmm mmm good.

Hi everyone!

It's down to the wire with ERAS opening up on Sept 15th. For those of you not in medicine, that's the service we use to apply to residency programs (The Match is done via NRMP). In order to keep my nerves in check, I thought I'd share the things I've been loving lately. En avance!

Back To School Must-Haves: School-to-Work Edition

Tuesday, September 01, 2015
Hi everyone!

I wanted to do a quick back-to-school post highlighting some of my favorite pieces to get the new academic year started. For those of you who are long out of school, it's still a great time to have a fresh start mid-year. The items I mention in the second half are purchases that can transition seamlessly from pre-clinical years in med school to the clinical years: cute flats and sturdy totes (especially if that tote can hold a laptop, lunch bag, white coat and lots of books for didactic days). Let's get right to it!

post its - lip balm -  planner - cute mug for tea/coffee breaks - pastel highlighters  - candle for studying at home - staedtler color pens  - best pen ever (0.38 tip black gel pen Pilot G-2) - moleskine notebooks (not included but great for clinic)
Transitional pieces (from lecture to clinic/office - including two on-trend items for the rebel fashionistas)
bags: longchamp le pliage in navy, kate spade neutral tote - stella mccartney backpack (drool)
flats: vince camuto point black flats - steve madden quilted flats (now on sale) - loeffler randall leopard lace-ups (amazing!)

Freshman? I suggest a laptop, or tablet + keyboard. You'll be golden for lectures. If you like annotating free-hand, notability is a great app for adding notes with a stylus to your pdf slides.

What are you back-to-school must haves? Share them below!
